Hello everyone, thanks very much for following my blog! Been quite busy in the past few days s o haven't had much time to reply to anyone or post anything. Since there are so many comments I figure it'll be easier to just answer stuff right here. So:

A Nigel Mansell was a British world champion F1 driver in like the 90s, and Dan Maher is "MrPointyHead", editor of Xbox Live for Europe. Sort of like Major Nelson in the USA or something? Either way, if you play online xbox, chances are you've seen his face.

A You didn't even have to ask my friend, he is on my list! Eventually I'll get round to it.

A Sorry, the original isn't that big! You could scale it up forself maybe, but it might look a little blocky. Try it though!

Q "Dude it would be awesome karma if you could post the PSD allowing other people to drop their drawings into the intro screen [along with a link to the font]."

A I'm afraid I won't be doing this for a couple of reasons - mainly because I've painted all around real screenshots. It wouldn't really be a case of deleting layers and dropping new stuff in because you'd still have to rub out all my crap anyway. So you might as well just do what I did and start on an actual screenshot. Secondly the filesize is pretty big.

Oh, and there's no link to the font because it doesn't exist as far as I can tell. I took the letters from other character screenshots, or took photos from my TV and then rearranged the images to what I wanted to spell. Then you have to paint over (again) all the messed up bits, balance out the colours so it matches the overall tone of the rest of the image, and re-do the glowy red around the edges + the shadow underneath.... Phew!

i think that's it for now, thanks again for looking! I'll be doing more stuff in the future!

Two animated walk cycles

A couple of walk cycle tests I did a month or so ago. It's pretty easy to nail a basic walk, but the tricky part is really injecting character into the action.
I was thinking, an old woman is pretty hard to get right... to make her walk with relative ease, but still show her age at the same time. I gave it a shot anyway. The man's a bit weird with his dress sense, I know. He has a confident stride none the less!

Each story is between 4-8 pages and relates in some way or another to the theme of "the sun". Argh, forgot to update recently! I was signing at the Selfmade Hero stand @ MCM Expo in the Excel Centre two weekends ago, so that was fun. We sold out of Richard III books too! Hello to anyone who was there :D

Anyway, another thing that I should have done ages ago is to direct people's attention toward this blog where a few illustrator friends and myself are doing what is now monthly art projects.

Was listening to a lot of Motown the other day and started doing a drawing a kind of 60's cop/vigilante/hero whatever duo. One a kung-fu karate guy and the other a motown singer by day, gun-weilding warrior by night afro woman... Karate guy looked like an idiot and I hated everything by the end. Here's the woman in an unfinished state.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Right, well, here's the 'badnik' concept art design I did for Sonic 4. Being a long time fan off the series (well, until Adventure, that is) I thought it'd be cool to see this guy from Sonic CD in the game.

I'm actually really glad that Sega's decided to go back to the 2D games, call it Sonic 4, and totally FORGET the rest of the Sonic games they've been churning out for over a decade now.

Though it makes me wonder why now? Sonic 4 is the game that should have been released on the Sega Saturn back in 1995. Nintendo probably has something to do with it, since they released the New Super Mario Bros game, and I guess that got Sega thinking. Not that I'm complaining of course. I'm glad they're finally seeing some sense (or so it seems for the moment).

Sonic & Knuckles was the last GOOD Sonic game in my opinion. Even though Sonic Adventure was Sonic's first venture into the 3D world, and I was happy when it finally came out... I kind of knew in my heart, that this game sucked balls a little. Bad controls, stupid characters like Big the Cat and "E-whatshisface-Gamma"... Amy and her bastard hammer.. Knuckles' totally bollocks treasure-hunting levels. Bad music. Argh! I just wanted to run around as Sonic through some lush environments, jump on bad guys' heads and collect Chaos Emeralds in the Special stages before having an epic showdown with Dr Robotnik and his latest creation.

Unfortunately all the good stuff was to be replaced by an over-crowded cast who you're forced to play with and take pretty much all emphasis off of Sonic as the hero and main character of the franchise. And teaming up with Robotnik at the end of practically every game since SA1 is just... ugh.

Anyway, we'll see if this new instalment is any good. It doesn't seem to be that different from Sonic 1, which in my opinion isn't such a great thing.. but hey. I will give it a chance.

JUST... PLEASE DON'T BURN MY HEART AGAIN, SEGA.

Good grief, one thing after another. Suddenly got massively ill a couple of weeks ago and was totally out for the count. Couldn't do a thing and got behind on all my stuff. Past week's been alright, bar a few spew-moments. But I'm ACTUALLY over it now - all good!

I was doing a little Sonic the Hedgehog thing right before I got sick actually... a "badnik concept design" challenge thing Sega had set up right before the announcement of Sonic 4, but I couldn't complete it because of my terrible illness!! :O

So I'll probably just post it up here instead!

Did I already mention this? I can't remember. Anyway, It's been a while since my last attempt, but now I am once again building a site for the web... and this time, it's working! Over the past week I have been edging closer to completing this goal thanks to the help of Phil, who's been showing me how to use Dreamweaver (and at the same time, a bit of Illustrator too which I've never really had any use for until now).

It's going pretty well and I'm pleased with what's happening so far. The first time I tried making a site, I went in too fast and way too complicated. So now I'm just keeping it simple (mostly). Only setback is that someone's just taken the web domain I was eyeing up. I'm actually pretty annoyed about that.. I wanted a .com! This is the third time I've been denied my preferred choice! Oh well, patwarren.co.uk is okay I guess. What's better, "pat-warren.com" or "patwarren.co.uk"?

Also, I didn't realise how many "patwarren" sites there are on the internet. Too many people with my name. I seriously need to sort these guys out...

I went to see Avatar in 3D at the IMAX with Lara on Thursday. I thought it was really good, and will now direct whoever to what Lara has written about it! It's what I think too (apart from being reluctant to see it). Read her thoughts here.

Ahh finally, after 7 days of solid drawing, I finished my Manga-Jiman entry today. Printed it and took it PERSONALLY to the embassy (well, I had to go into town anyway). Pretty proud of this one, so yeah.. hope it does well!!

Life drawing

Today I went to Dr Sketchy in Islington which is a sort of Burlesque life drawing thing.. it's pretty weird! But fun. I think I need more practice at quick-fire drawing. Hmmm...

Anyway, here's a pencil drawing I did in my sketchbook this evening after I got back home (ref from a figure-drawing book):

I scanned it in and messed about with it in photoshop for a couple of minutes before uploading here though.

David Hockney

Just now I watched a program about an artist called David Hockney. He's pretty famous in the art world. Me being generally ignorant about pretty much everything, however, means I knew next to nothing about him until now.

I think he and his work is pretty damn cool so I thought I'd just share a bit here. Also, he's been doing loads of landscapes in the Yorkshire countryside throughout the different seasons of the year, which interested me particularly at the moment because I'm trying to do a couple of landscapes from photos that I've taken (or just from memory... maybe a bit of both).

I've recently started trying to learn how to use Maya to create things in 3D... it's pretty tough for my 2D brain. BUT, I have managed to make a small temple thing so far which is good. Had a little snag along the way, but got over it eventually.

At the moment I'm following a tutorial to make a 3D motocross helmet (I think that's what it is anyway), so I'll see how that goes!
